Very little exists that describes the feelings and thoughts of learners about school. Even less exists about the views of five-year-old young people during the first year of their long, 15,000 hour schooling journey. This book explores their viewpoint and shows that we give little credit and validity to the perceptions of five-year-olds. These children provide a vital image for teachers of what really goes on. They report that they are very soon aware of the authoritarian nature of school and its heavy dependence on imposed rules and routines as a means of controlling what goes on in classrooms. This can easily become the start of the deadening of the spirit, rather than a celebration of the joy of learning.
