The traditional seventeen-syllable haiku always contains an evocative reference to a season and a distinct pause or interruption. Presented here are twelve haiku rendered in Japanese calligraphy, Romaji transliteration, and English translation. Each is paired with a shin hanga woodcut. With their depth and delicacy, wide range of subtle hues, and time-honored focus on beauties, landscapes, birds, and flowers, such prints have long been treasured in both East and West.
The prints reproduced in this calendar are in the extensive collections of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Pomegranate also publishes the books Shin Hanga: The New Print Movement of Japan and Haiku: Japanese Art and Poetry.
All of Pomegranate’s calendars are printed with soy-based inks on FSC® certified paper, which means the paper has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® and manufactured by an FSC certified printer. FSC certification promotes responsible forest management by ensuring that forestry practices are environmentally responsible, socially equitable, and economically viable.
