Agnes Jones

by Felicity McCall
£6.95   paperback  Guildhall Press (2006)

Agnes Jones by Felicity McCall Born into an Anglican military family in 1832, Agnes Jones grew up in Fahan in County Donegal in the North West of Ireland. By age fourteen, she had already developed a missionary zeal to help the sick and the poor, which led her to enrol as one of Florence Nightingale's first trainee nurses.

Nurse Jones devoted her short life to caring for her fellow countrymen and women whose dream of escaping the legacy of Ireland's Great Famine had ended in poverty and despair in the slums of Liverpool. Because of her dedication, humanity and pioneering work in the infamous Brownlow Hill workhouse, Agnes is still remembered with affection and pride in Merseyside.

This short account is beautifully illustrated by Derry artist Joe Campbell. It includes images and extracts from the stage play by Handful Productions and from the film Agnes by Ambient Light Productions and Greater Shantallow Community Arts.
