Deschooling Society

by Ivan Illich - £8.95  Marion Boyars (1971)
paperback    ISBN 13: 9780714508795 | ISBN 10: 0714508799

Thirty-odd years since publication and still, unfortunately, a classic and necessary critique of schooling. Schools have failed our individual needs, supporting misleading notions of "progress" and development fostered by the belief that ever-increasing production, consumption and profit are proper yardsticks for measuring the quality of human life. Illich suggests some radical and exciting reforms for the education system, which he argues are necessary to turn civilisation from its headlong rush towards the violence that frustrated expectations will certainly unleash so long as the school myth is allowed to persist.
